QUEEN SHIRL’E ACADEMY - BRING THE NOISE
Hosted by the Queen Shirle Academy, the Bring the Noise programme supports up and coming artists, producers and songwriters. This workshop was held on Friday 14 June. Speakers were PMA artists Sam V and Hales; and Petrina Togi-Sa’ena (Pacific Music Awards Trust), each sharing their journey as music artists, their time in the industry and their experiences with the Pacific Music Awards.
PASIFIKA RUGBY HALL OF FAME
The inaugural Pasifika Rugby Hall of Fame was held in March to honour the inductees to the Hall of Fame, Pasifika rugby and the Pasifika rugby community. The Pacific Music Awareds Trust were approached to support the Induction Ceremony and Pacific Festival day, in regards to managing and providing artists to perform. For the Induction Ceremony, the performers were: Annie Crummer, Anuanua Dance Troupe and Che Fu. For the Pacific Festival Day., the performers were Anuanua Dance Troupe, Mal Lakatani, Junior Soqeta, Thomas Stowers, Majic, Sam V, Annie Crummer, Tree & Swiss. This was an opportunity to connect with a different industry and sector; and to provide support for the events in terms of performers and event support. This was a great opportunity for community connections and relationship building.
PORTAGE CROSSING
Through the Tautua Programme, support was provided for artists to perform as part of the Portage Crossing event. This was held on Saturday 24 February, at the Mangere Waterfront Reserve. The Portage Crossing event is a Harbour to Harbour Regatta and Family Festival. It is a revival and celebration of the traditional Mana Whenua route and this will be the 32nd year for the event Support was provided for artists to perform, which included Siavani, MC Queen Shirle, DJ Leemz, Tigi and Unity Pacific, Mal Lakatani, Lopz & Da Rastaz and Anuanua Dance Troupe. . The Portage Crossing Regatta and Festival is a free, family friendly event and is hosted by Manukau Urban Māori Authority (MUMA).
2024 NEW MUSIC PASIFIKA
The first funding round for the New Music Pasifika funding with NZ On Air, was February/March 2024. The Pacific Music Awards Trust continues to support this funding by providing comms to the PMA database and community, to provide support to NZ On Air and to also offer mentoring to the artists who are the recipients of this funding. Our Trust understands and values the important contribution this support will make to the Pacific music community and NZ music industry.

WAITANGI KI MANUKAU
Through the Tautua Programme, support was provided for artists to perform as part of the Waitangi ki Manukau event. Held on Monday 6 February 2024, at Manukau Sports Bowl, this event is co-presented by Auckland Council and Manukau Urban Maori Authority (MUMA). It is a free public event provided for the community, to celebrate, educate and connect for Waitangi Day.
WAITANGI DAY KI TAMAKI
Through the Tautua Programme, support was provided for artists to perform as part of the Waitangi Day ki Tamaki event. Held on Monday 6 February 2024, at Pt England Reserve, Glen Innes, Auckland; this event is co-presented by Auckland Council and Hustle Management. After no event in East Auckland for some time, this event was welcomed by the local community. It was free public event provided for the community, to celebrate, educate and connect for Waitangi Day.
TH’ORCHARD – COMPILATION
Th'Orchard have been working with local artists in the South Island, providing mentoring and support with their music. Through this work they identified a number of artists who had songs unreleased and the idea of a compilation album was created. The project ‘Conversations on the Edges of Rooms’ was released in December 2024 by Th'Orchard Records, with the album cover artwork by Christchurch visual artist Kophie Su'a-Hulsbosch.
CHRISTCHURCH HIP HOP SUMMIT: TALANOA & LISTENING PARTY 3 October
The Pacific Music Awards returned to support the Christchurch Hip Hop Summit, held 2 – 6 October 2024. On Thursday 3rd October, we presented two events as part of the overall summit programme. First we co-hosted the PMA Talanoa session with Th’Orhard, which was hosted by Sol Smith, with Mark Vanilau, Tenei, Sam V and Petrina Togi-Sa’ena as the speakers. That evening we held the PMA Listening Party, a live music showcase event, which featured PMA performers Sam V and Diggy Dupe alongside local artists. Both events provided a great opportunity to connect with local Christchurch artists and the creative community. Petrina Togi-Sa’ena and Mark De Jong from the PMA team were in attendance, to support both events. Looking to build and re-connect the local creative community, the Christchurch Hip Hop Summit have been developing the event each year and we are committed to supporting the annual event and building support for the Pacific music community of Christchurch.

STAND UP STAND OUT
On Saturday 7 September in collaboration with Stand Up Stand Out (SUSO), the Pacific Music Awards hosted a mentoring support session for the SUSO finalists, held at the Aotea Centre. Hosted by Gene Rivers (Auckland Council, SUSO) the presenters were Mal Lakatani, Tree, Sam V and Swap Gomez; each sharing their own journey in music and providing advice and encouragement to the finalists for their upcoming performance at the finals event, which were being held the following week at the Auckland Town Hall. The speakers had also been involved in the judging process and would also be at the finals; along with the PMA team to support the finalists.
SMOKEFREE TANGATA BEATs
This year, working with Rockquest Trust, we provided support for the Smokefree Tangata Beats National Final event, by including Jarna as part of the judging panel. The event was held within the theatre at Due Drop Event Centre, Auckland on Friday 13 September. It was great to connect with the event and see the performers from different schools across Aotearoa. The PMA team also attended to support the event and are in conversation with the national winners for some follow up mentoring sessions.
SECONDARY SCHOOLS – BACKSTAGE PASS TO PMAs
To support the next generation of artists the Pacific Music Awards Trust engaged with Play It Strange Trust to offer access to the soundchecks on the day of the Pacific Music Awards – and a behind the scenes tour backstage to show the plans and preparations for the awards ceremony.
Music students and community groups were also offered – complimentary GA tickets to attend the Pacific Music Awards, which included: Navigators, Crescendo Trust, Play It Strange Trust, Queen Shirle Academy, Otahuhu College, Manurewa College, Fairfield College in Hamilton, and also youth groups from Hamilton and Tokoroa.

DOMINION LAW WORKSHOP – Navigating the Music Business
The PMA Trust partnered with Dominion Law to present the workshop ‘NAVIGATING THE MUSIC BUSINESS - Managing your music income and rights’. Held 22 August, at Big Fan, Auckland, this was initially offered to 2023 and 2024 PMA finalists; then the invitation was extended include performers, artists, award recipients connected to the PMAs. Details were also shared via Instagram. The workshop was shared information for artists about navigating their rights, understanding income streams and utilising free resources. Presented by music law specialists Joel Tashkoff and Zeelan Talagi, with the aim to bridge the knowledge gap and facilitate open conversations regarding the business side of music.
FETU CREATIVE FORUM
Held 23 July at Big Fan, Auckland, the Fetu Creative Forum: PMA Session, featured 2024 PMA finalists as the speakers: ELENA, Ema I’u, Pat and Sam V. Facilitated by Lucky Lance, the talanoa allowed the finalists to share their personal journey, their own experiences, who and what has influenced their music, their creative process, what drives them forward and hopes for the future.
WELLINGTON ENGAGEMENT
A key part of the 20th year celebrations was to build connections across Aotearoa. We hosted two in person gatherings in Wellington in July, to connect and re-connect with local Pacific artists, songwriters and producers. We came together to network, discuss and capture ideas of activities to do together in Wellington. Plans are underway for the next steps for future gatherings and activities in Wellington for the Pacific music community.
