Punialava’a are renowned pioneers of Samoan Music. The group was established since 1968 in Samoa by Rev. Iosefa Lale Peteru. Lale (as he is known) composed songs for the band in the 70s, with his wife Vini becoming their lead singer in the 80s. Throughout both decades they excelled at producing hit songs and were supported by numerous accomplished musicians. The next decade, saw Lale and Vini’s children become part of the family band, starting with Viellani, Vania and Punialava’a and most recently, the youngest member Miss Melody has joined them. Punialava’a has performed to, harmonized with, driven and empowered musical artists both locally and internationally empowering and paving the way for various Samoan local artists and NZ born Samoan artists who have recorded Punialava’a songs.
Punialava’a were the recipients of the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award at the Pacific Music Awards, which recognised their 50 year contribution to Pacific music. The bands’ tunes and lyrics are celebrated and appreciated by all age groups with its classical island touch. The Punialava’a music, lyrics and metaphorical messages are authentic and true to the heart of Samoa and the Pacific and are now used for the Samoan school curriculum. Punialava’a hopes to bring awareness about ourselves, our families, our society and their future.
