This was the pilot for the project, which brought together music creatives to compose a waiata that reflected whakapapa between Tangata Whenua and Tagata Samoa.  It is the first of the Hiva Folaua Vaka project that supports Pasefika communities to record waiata/pese in their respective languages using a collective village approach of cultural exchange, sharing values and acknowledging history through composing and recording music.

Uiish Eaa Rae / Iee Koko

This song speaks to the deep meaning of our paradise homeland, Aitutaki, especially for those of us living overseas. It reflects the cultural oratory traditions that we value and treasure, including the significance of a king’s coronation, and our acknowledgement of the heavens that charted and guided our ancestors safely to Aitutaki.

It honours the importance of holding onto our history and legacy our cultural traditions, arts and crafts, language, stories, songs and genealogy and the responsibility to preserve these for future generations.

The song also carries gratitude for the missionaries who brought the Gospel to Aitutaki, guiding our ancestors in faith, teaching them to pray to the heavens for peace, strength, and daily revelation from God.

All of these themes are wrapped in a modern contemporary sound, allowing the message to connect across generations while keeping our cultural groove alive through a fresh musical expression.

Fenoga He Tofua

My Nana Linnovai Vaipa is the eldest of 8 children to her mother the late Vaipa Tauetau.
She grew up in Mutalau, Niue Island and because she was the eldest child to a single mother - a heavy responsibility fell on her shoulders.
In 1969, my Nana left Niue island via The Tofua and began a two week journey to Niu Silani.
My nana journeyed here to help her mum give her siblings a better life than the one they had in Niue.
One day while on the phone with her, I asked her about her boat journey to Niu Silani. She shared how much fun she had visiting all the different islands & how each island would always give baskets of fruit, freshly caught (and cooked) fish and many other food items she had never tried before.
She loved how her people were all crammed on the deck of the boat (like Niue Sardines) and how lovely it was to sleep under the stars.
I wanted to tell an untold story of my people & to pay homage to my Matua's (Niue elders) who, like my nana, ventured to Niu Silani to start a new life for their loved ones.
I also wanted to express the excitement and sadness there is when leaving behind your homeland - some of my matua's never got the opportunity to return to Niue before their death.
This song is a lologo of grief, excitement and adventure. My hope is that the lyrics resonate with all generations.

E Tuatau Uatu

“E TUATAU UATU” is a tender Pacific farewell - a song that honors love, loss, and the journey of letting go. Sung in Cook Islands Māori and Tokelau, it carries the spirit of the vaka (canoe) setting sail toward the land above, guided by steady winds and unshifting love. With verses that speak of care, remembrance, and the inevitability of time, the chorus anchors the message: you are forever in my heart to stay. A gentle, ocean-bound tribute to those we cherish, even as tides change and goodbyes draw near.

Mother Of Pearls

Vox: “Mother of Pearls” is a cultural voyage through the South Pacific. We were inspired when Pati Umaga led our group with an initial practice of passing the conch shell around to build connection, trust, and shared understanding. It was then we saw the beauty of blending our Tokelau and Cook Islands language, the song traces a journey of reconnection-between people, ancestors, identity, and the ocean that binds them. Each verse carries the sound of heritage, while the hook calls us to share the conch, share the voice, share the knowledge. Like the mother-of-pearl that strengthens and protects, the song honors the beauty of community, the wisdom of elders, and the enduring call of the Moana.

Jere:  A poetic retelling of my families journey from Tokelau to New Zealand

Leo Malie

‘Leo Malie’ is an ode to our tupuna, our kaiga, and the Tokelau community here in Aotearoa. Woven with the echoes of our ancestral songs and the voices of new generations, this piece is a reflection of the journey from the shores of Tokelau to life in New Zealand. It honours the past, grounds us in the present, and looks with hope toward the future of our diaspora. If community were a song, this is what it would sound like to us, the sound of Tokelau resilience, love, and identity, carried across oceans and held in the hearts of our people.

Tokaga O Tokelau

Tokaga O Tokelau” is a powerful tribute to the roots, resilience, and unity of the Tokelauan people. Through evocative storytelling, the song weaves a journey across Tokelau’s three atolls — each verse honouring the distinct beauty, history, and identity that make each atoll unique.

From the footsteps of the first settlers to the enduring guardianship of tradition, the lyrics reflect the foundational moments that have shaped the Tokelau we know today. Every line is a nod to the spirit, strength, and pride of a people bound by ancestry and ocean.

While the verses highlight the individual character of each atoll, the chorus rises in harmony — celebrating the unbreakable cultural and spiritual bond that unites Tokelau. It sings of a shared past, a resilient present, and a hopeful future, carrying the call for unity across generations.
