 Pacific Music Awards Trust - Media release: August 2020 2020 Pacific Music Awards Celebrating Pacific Music Our Pacific Music Awards Trust acknowledge the challenging and uncertain times we are in. Our hearts and thoughts are especially with our Pacific community and music industry as we navigate through this time together. After postponing the Pacific Music Awards earlier in the year, we have been revising our plans and considering a number of factors, with the health and safety of our Pacific music community, taking priority. The next key aspect, was financial, as we adjusted to the new economic environment, that we are all operating within. We wanted to continue to support our Pacific artists and keep our community connected and looked forward to sharing the celebration that is the Pacific Music Awards. The Trust is dedicated to celebrating Pacific music and honouring Pacific artists and this commitment was a core aspect of the decision to host the awards ceremony this year. We are very happy to announce that the 2020 Pacific Music Awards will now be held as a live event on Wednesday 30 September at the BNZ Theatre, Vodafone Events Centre, Manukau. The 2020 Pacific Music Awards will celebrate music released by Pacific artists in 2019, acknowledging music in all genres and languages. The majority of the award categories are for our Aotearoa Pacific artists and our Best International Pacific Artist category allows us to connect with Pacific artists from around the world. This year we received the largest number of entries in the history of Pacific Music Awards, which confirmed we have a strong and active Pacific music community. In April, the Pacific Music Awards Trust took on the challenge to host our Finalist Announcement as a live online event. We had a fantastic response to the online announcement, allowing us to connect with a national and international audience. During May, NZ Music Month, we held the voting for the SunPix People’s Choice Award – Best Pacific Artist. All our 2020 finalists were eligible for this award, with the winner determined by public vote. It was awesome to see the public support for our 2020 finalists and we received the highest number of votes to date for this award. The Trust would like to acknowledge the 2020 finalists, for their patience and understanding, while we worked through our options for the awards this year. We also wish to sincerely thank our family of sponsors and funders, who have maintained their support for the awards. We have been affected financially, and also acknowledge that our sponsors, funders, and the individuals and organisations we work with, have also been financially impacted. It has been great to work together, to find the way forward that would allow us to deliver the awards event. Our new financial circumstances have meant we will reduce the scale of the awards and it will be an invitation only event. We are happy to remain at our home for the awards, the Vodafone Events Centre and look forward to returning to the theatre part of the venue, where we hosted the awards during 2006 – 2013. The award categories to be presented at the 2020 Pacific Music Awards, will be as follows:
The 2020 awards ceremony will be filmed by SunPix, for broadcast as a television special on Tagata Pasifika on Saturday 10 October; and will also be streamed live on the night, so we can connect with our national and international audience. The music industry has been significantly affected economically this year, which was affirmed by the Government implementing the New Zealand Music Recovery Fund. This signals to us the significance of the music industry to our Government and to our country, and also at the same time, confirmed the financial impact that the industry is facing now and into the future. The 2020 Pacific Music Awards will be a collective positive community celebration of Pacific music, honouring and recognising the talents and amazing work of our Pacific artists. More than ever, the Pacific Music Awards Trust are looking forward to the awards ceremony – we hope you can join us on Wednesday 30 September for the 2020 Pacific Music Awards.
